What DVF wore at the MET 2019 is anything but casual. Want to know why? Read it here!
Everyone at the MET Gala, just a few days ago, wore their personality at its best. One of the attendees couldn’t pass unnoticed, who also caused reflection or at least curiosity about her clothes. That’s Diane von Furstenberg dressing as the Statue of Liberty.
Apart from being a fashion icon and an It Girl since the 70s’, she’s also a devoted philanthropist. This time it took her unbelieving because she says she doesn’t like to ask for money, but it was Stephen Briganti -president of the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation- who reminded her the real and deep bond she has with the monument.
As von Furstenberg has written in her book ‘The Woman I Wanted to Be’, her mother was a survivor from Auschwitz concentration camps in 1944, and after she was born, her mother gave her a note in which she wrote Diane was her “torch of freedom”. Briganti told her the exact words and she couldn’t say no to join the cause.
That cause was to raise $100 million for the new Statue of Liberty museum, which opened on May 16 in the Ellis Island.
According to The New York Post, von Furstenberg has always been drawn to the statue. The first time she saw it was when she became an immigrant at 22 yeas old when she moved to New York City.
